Mario Faulkner
We are really proud to introduce our featured athlete, Mario Faulkner!
Mario is someone we can’t help but admire and be inspired by. One might initially be really intimidated by his sheer size and presence! But once you break the ice, you know that Mario is as genuine and kind as they come. And he doesn’t let his size get in the way of his smarts, he has insisted on safety as number one, from the beginning and WE LOVE THIS! No ego gets in the way of Mario doing things correctly and safely first, before chasing the big weights and numbers. Another thing we appreciate, is his never quit attitude. We often found Mario pushing through to complete a workout, long after the class had packed their bags and left. He is an all-out-effort kind of guy, and our community wouldn’t be the same without him. Check out his progress, and what he had to say about his fitness journey at Argonaut.
1. What was your starting weight?
292 lbs.
2. Current weight?
268 lbs.
3. Have you lost any inches? If so where and how many?
4 inches around the waist. From 44 to 40
4. List a couple lifts and what you started at, versus the weight you are at now.
Deadlift: Start – 135 Current – 235
Back Squat: Start – 135 Current – 175
5. In what ways has your endurance improved?
My recovery time has improved. When I first started, I could barely pick myself up off the floor after each workout. Then, I would get home and couldn’t move for hours. Now, I recover faster after the workout and have the energy to move when I get home to cook, clean, etc.
6. Describe how you think CrossFit has affected other areas of your life.
I just feel better about myself in general.
7. Tell us why you like training at Argonaut.
I like the smaller groups. Working out with more people (50, 100, etc.) would intimidate me. The smaller groups makes it enjoyable for new ones to learn.
8. What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first impression was “this is not going to be fun.” That changed when I started seeing results. I still “whine” before each class, but I have the mindset to fight through every class. My goal is: “If I can walk out of class, it was a good class”.
9. What was your first “bright spot”?
It wasn’t something I noticed. Family that I have not seen in a few months pointed out that I look slimmer than when they last saw me.
10. What are you working on now?
A couple of things. First, my endurance and conditioning is terrible. I still get tired very quickly so I’m working to improve that. Also, my upper body strength needs to improve. I hope to one day be able to do a pull up without using bands or any other assistance.
